Designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli in the second half of the 18th-century, Mariinskyi Palace is the official ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine and used for hosting other heads of state.
Electric heating was chosen as a sustainable modern technology to protect the historical landmark during its reconstruction.
The challenge:
Safe walk for pedestrians during winter times with no impact on the environment and zero maintenance costs
Public places, such as historical monuments, are obliged to provide safety for their visitors. During winter that can be quite a challenge. Icy conditions put pedestrians at greater risk that could result in injuries. Road salt is usually the most common solution, but it is not the best one. Especially when considering it can damage historic sites, is heavy on the environment, and contributes to maintenance costs.
The solution:
Outdoor electric heating system with sensors for low temperature and moisture
To ensure safety of visitors, an efficient ice and snow melting setup was needed in the outdoor area surrounding the palace. Two flexible electric heating systems were used. They perform effective protection of the surface while defending the environment against salting and antifreeze damage.
The outdoor electric heating system is fully flexible and functions automatically: it is switched on once the sensors detect low temperature and moisture, and switched off after the surface is cleaned. This provides cost-effective protection to the large area and is the most energy-efficient solution for the ground ice and snow melting applications. Managed by the high-end controller, the system is maintenance free.
The result:
Effective protection of the surface while defending the environment against salting and antifreeze damage
The ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine is equipped with an around-the-clock snow cleaning service by Danfoss. Mariinskyi Palace is open for public excursions from September 2020.
