Government Launches Wave 3 of Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund to Boost Energy Efficiency

In September 2024, the Government launched Wave 3 of the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming the energy efficiency of social housing across England. This program seeks to retrofit a significant portion of social housing, bringing properties up to Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) band C standards, which will result in warmer, more energy-efficient homes for tenants.

The primary goals of the fund are to reduce carbon emissions, lower fuel bills, and combat fuel poverty, ensuring that social housing tenants benefit from more sustainable and cost-effective energy use. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the twin challenges of climate change and the rising cost of living by creating a greener, more energy-efficient housing stock.

Support for Social Housing Providers

The Social Housing Fund offers financial backing to local authorities, registered social housing providers, combined authorities, and registered charities that own social housing. The financial support will allow these organizations to implement a range of energy-saving upgrades and low-carbon heating solutions, improving both the environmental footprint of these homes and the comfort of residents.

Building the Retrofit Supply Chain

In addition to upgrading housing, the fund also aims to strengthen the retrofit supply chain by promoting innovation and enhancing productivity in the construction sector. By encouraging the growth of this industry, the Government hopes to meet the increasing demand for energy-efficient technologies and services, ensuring that the country is well-prepared for future challenges in sustainable housing.

Upskilling for Long-Term Impact

Another key aspect of the initiative is the commitment to upskilling social landlords in retrofit practices. By providing training and support, the fund seeks to ensure that these organizations are equipped to carry out energy efficiency upgrades, fostering long-term improvements across the sector. This focus on building expertise is crucial to ensuring that energy efficiency becomes a core part of social housing management in the future.

Through Wave 3 of the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund, the Government is not only addressing immediate housing challenges but also laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and energy-efficient future in the UK’s social housing sector.
